First, she was a nobody. A more appropriate analogy would be how a nobody hit a foul ball but the league decided to call it a Grand Slam and award her with the MVP award as well. The script is not excellent.

pu-leeeze. if she were a nobody, you'd be giddy with praise, about how a nobody hit a home run at her first at-bat in the big leagues. because it's about a teenager, you automatically make a facile comparison to john hughes? if you can see the difference between this script and pretty in pink, you're even dumber than i thought. this script is excellent, with the sharp patter of a bette davis movie. but i guess the stripper turned writer makes a better story.

Of course, just because she used to be a stripper there's gunna be a whole bunch of controversy and bullshit. She can't write and it's all people trying to make money off her story and... and... and so she's not a fucking saint, who cares? Ever hear of Courtney Love, Frances Farmer, or Marilyn Monroe? They weren't angels either but they're good at what they do (or did in Frances and Marilyn's case) just like Diablo Cody. Her past doesn't really affect her success as a writer. And if she has some weird writing style or whatever the hell it is everyone's saying, good for her. If everyone did everything the same, I think I would have to shoot myself from how dull life would be.

Ever since Diablo was on Letterman, people pretty much know about her history etc.

Re: Nom. for best screenplay, however... I've read probably 30 pages. Seemed overly concerned with making every single char quirky. I'd say the film owes a lot to the actors.

Nevertheless, ever since *the thin script* of Lost in Translation received a nom - and won! - I'm not expecting much from the Academy anymore. Don't think anyone reads the scripts.
